The vicious cycle of climate crisis and industrial agriculture - exchange of experiences and practices in the Balkan and Mediterranean.
13 December 2025
Climate change is striking the agricultural sector with particular intensity. Its effects are now being felt worldwide. Alterthess’ research “Τhe climate was already bad…” focuses on the consequences of climate change on Greek agriculture highlighting the role that industrial agriculture plays in exacerbating the climate crisis. (Read the whole research https://alterthess.gr/…/the-climate-was-already-bad/). In the first event about this issue, on September 16th, we discussed the conclusion of the research and investigated an alternative model as well as the creation of a more socially just and environmentally sustainable food chain, with the participation of alternative agri-food initiatives in Thessaloniki.
Now we are taking another step forward by attempting to deepen the discussion and place it in an international context. In this online workshop, we will share experiences and practices trying to break this vicious cycle of climate crisis and industrial agriculture. We will discuss with researchers, members of alternative agri-food initiatives and small-scale food producers from Balkans and the Mediterranean about their struggles amid rising inequality and the devastating impacts of the climate crisis. Parallel, we will talk about sustainable farming practices, the significance of alternative distribution networks that promote local products while reducing the carbon footprint of our food.
