The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation – Office in Greece and the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation are proud to present the exhibition Artists in Athens – City of Crisis in Athens, October 5-23, 2017.
The exhibition features the works of 14 artists and is being presented in Greece after its unveiling at the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung in Berlin in June.
The economic recession has not only left a deep imprint on the lives of the Greek capital’s inhabitants, but has also marked the city itself. Shuttered shops that were unable to survive, abandoned buildings falling into dilapidation, street corners turned into makeshift homes for the homeless, sidewalks that have become the haunts of addicts are now components of the new urban landscape of Athens. The Crisis is registered in daily life and inscribed in the fabric of the city—a process that the arts observe but also engage in discourse.
Fourteen artists converse with the City of Crisis using photography, the visual arts, biographical detail, artistic and political statements, and video installations to create a new framework in which life, artistic creation, and the economic recession coexist.
